Teen Gastric Bypass Can Increase Risk of Birth Defects

While the benefits of gastric bypass surgery are many—increased life expectancy, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduction in cardiac disease—there is controversy when it comes to teenagers and this life-altering surgery. This type of surgery is being used more frequently on adolescents who are morbidly obese, but there are concerns about the effectiveness, safety, and long-term benefits in this age group.
Research has shown that gastric bypass can have an extreme effect, not only on weight, but on diabetes, reducing and even eliminating type 2 diabetes in a teenage study. A 2008 study “found that, in most cases, teens can lose one-third of their weight and come off diabetes medications with remission of their diabetes one year after bypass surgery. This is certainly not the case for similar diabetic teenage patients who did not undergo surgery.”
While the risk of death is low in adults, falling below 1 percent, there are other complications and resulting issues for teens considering this surgery, namely birth defects. The various surgical procedures used on the morbidly obese can reduce the absorption of critical vitamins and minerals, particularly folic acid. That reduction can lead to a higher risk of birthing babies with spine and brain birth defects, according to a new study. Folic acid is a key element in the prevention of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.
While vitamin and mineral supplements should be come a part of the daily, and lifetime, regimen of patients who have undergone, teenagers are notoriously neglectful when it comes to this necessary routine. In fact, some research shows that only 14 percent of teens adhere to their daily supplments.
Bruce Wolfe, surgeon and co-chair of the National Institutes of Health research consortium on bariatric surgery, said, “You can’t just write off these birth defects because they are rare. But there are adverse effects from the obesity as well. So the practical and ethical dilemma is at what point do you deny a tremendously beneficial procedure.”
Joan Han of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, suggest that weight-loss surgery should be considered with extreme caution and only in the most obese who had exhausted all other avenues.

pomegranate juice adulterated

Is your pomegranate juice adulterated?

Washington, Nov 30 : Pomegranate juice is rich in antioxidants and good for health. But is the bottled juice you purchased real or adulterated? A US scientist is now studying samples from across the globe to find out.

You pick up a bottle of pomegranate juice, secure in the belief that it is rich in antioxidants and good for health. But is the juice you've purchased really pomegranate juice? Does the product label promise more than it delivers?

Cynthia Larive, professor of chemistry at University of California, is conducting tests to determine whether pomegranate juice or pomegranate juice blends are for real or adulterated.

"We are measuring levels of unique compounds in pomegranate juice and are able to use this 'molecular fingerprint' to discriminate against adulterated juice products," said Larive, according to a California statement.

In the lab, Larive and her graduate student Daniel Orr are measuring levels of different biochemicals, called small-molecule metabolites, present in juices.

They are using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and other tools to measure amino acids, organic acids, sugars, pomegranate pigment compounds, as well as health-producing antioxidant molecules unique to pomegranate juice.

"We have received a collection of pomegranate samples from around the world, as well as commercial juices such as beet, grape, apple and pear - to name just a few," Larive said.

"We're looking at whether or not our molecular fingerprint method can be used to identify products claiming to contain pomegranate juice when they don't, and products claiming to be pomegranate juice when they are not."

According to Larive, the three methods her lab used on pomegranate juices can be used to authenticate other products like wine and olive oil too.

Latest News Update About 3rd Degree Burn

Latest News Update About 3rd Degree Burn: Earlier this summer it was damned near impossible to get your hands on a bag of Doritos 3rd Degree Burn Scorchin’ Habanero tortilla chips, at least here in the Midwest. According to DEFCON Creator John Dilley, he was informed that delays were due to some of the ingredients being on back order. While waiting for the third and hottest version of the new “Degrees”, I went ahead and reviewed 1st Degree Burn Blazin’ Jalapeno and 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo Doritos. I rather liked the taste of the Blazin’ Jalapeno, but I considered the Fiery Buffalo to be in the long, historic line of forgettable Doritos flavors dropped along the wayside.

A few months later, Buddah rushed to the rescue and provided me a bag of the 3rd Degree Burn Scorchin’ Habanero chips, apparently readily available in his home state of Virginia. The following is the follow-up analysis of the third and final Doritos Degrees item.

Ingredients:
Whole corn, vegetable oil (corn, sunflower, and/or soybean oil), corn maltodextrin, salt, whey, monosodium glutamate, sodium diacetate, cheddar cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), artificial color (including: Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1), tomato powder, sugar, onion powder, natural flavors, modified corn starch, citric acid, cream, spices, artificial color (yellow 6 lake, red 40 lake, yellow 5, yellow 6), garlic powder, Monterey Jack cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), sour cream (cultured cream, nonfat milk), Swiss cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), Colby cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), artificial flavors, and paprika extract
Thoughts:
Some of the tortilla chips were bright red bordering on a very unnatural hot pinkish color, and quite frankly looked unappetizing. Upon first tasting one, almost right away I felt the tingle of heat. This was mixed with a confusing blend of flavors – it wasn’t sweet, it didn’t possess the true taste of habaneros, and it wasn’t especially cheesy. It had slight tones of tomato, was a tad salty, but lacked strong hints of paprika and onion powder. I think Frito-Lay went WAY off the mark for a harmonious taste and were left with something flat and uninspiring and left the spiciness control the flavor, committing an egregious no-no of fiery foods (which is don’t have a product that’s hot for heat’s sake; have a terrific flavor first). The heat arose considerably after nibbling on several chips. It reached a much higher scorch level than its 1st and 2nd Degree Burn counterparts, and would be considered good n’ blisteringly hot for mild snack fans. Chileheads would find it very tolerable and may estimate this to be around a medium heat.

After a while, I simply didn’t want anymore. I thought Scorchin’ Habanero Doritos lacked any semblance of a true snackability and was something I couldn’t care less about ever having again.

How depressing that after reaching lofty heights with the highly underrated Fiery Habanero flavored chips (first introduced in 2006, and now largely discontinued and is only available in a few markets), Doritos has sunk to a low with this junk. The little amount of heat Doritos 3rd Degree Burn Scorchin’ Habanero tortilla chips may have is not worth the uninspiring taste.

Heart Attack Grill

Heart Attack Grill
Lates News About Update Heart Attack Grill, At The Heart Attack Grill in Arizona, the more you weigh, the more you get. The kitschy medically-themed restaurant is now offering free meals to anyone weighing over 350 pounds. To hawk the new special, the “Home of the Double Bypass Burger” has enlisted plus-size spokesman Blair River, who tips the scales at 570 pounds.

“Other diets don’t deliver results,” River says in a new YouTube ad for the restaurant. “But I’ve made incredible progress on the ‘Heart Attack Grill’ diet. A couple months ago, I was wearing these,” he adds, holding up a small-waisted pair of pants.

The eatery, which serves burgers ranging from the “Single Bypass” to the “Quadruple Bypass,” boasts waitresses dressed in sexy nurse uniforms who refer to the customers as “patients.”

Want a Diet Coke? You’re in the wrong place. There are no diet sodas, just “flatline fries” cooked unapologetically in lard.

Ironically, the restaurant is owned by Jon Basso, a former nutritionist who used to run Jenny Craig weight-loss centers in Oklahoma, according to the Arizona Republic.

Basso is also featured in the YouTube ad, in which he wears a lab coat and identifies himself as “Dr. Jon, Founder of the ‘Heart Attack Grill Diet.’”

“I personally guarantee a stable upward progression of body weight while you’re enjoying great tasting foods,” he says with a smile. “Along with a cold beer and cigarette, it’s a diet you can stick to for life.”

But eater beware: The ad winkingly includes a long list of potential side effects, such as “sudden weight gain, repeated increase of wardrobe size, back pain, male breast growth, loss of sexual partners, lung cancer, tooth decay, liver sclerosis stroke and an inability to see your penis.”

Not to mention that “in some cases mild death may occur.”

Let’s hope their food lives up their slogan – a “taste worth dying for!”

Rachel Allen Bake

Rachel Allen Bake

Latest News Update About Rachel Allen Bake: One of the things that we have in the new house that we didn’t have before is Food TV. I cant believe that as a dedicated cook and baker I have existed this long without it :0) Actually, to be honest, I am not a huge TV person and I do have limited time to watch it, but I have been enjoying Rachel Allen, Bake. I love her soft lilting Irish accent. And, being a sucker for cook books, I recently bought her book that goes with the TV series.

Last night was both the first time that I have baked cookies in my new oven and the first time to make something from Rachel’s book. My husband said that he fancied chocolate chip cookies, so I made Rachel’s basic biscuit recipe, varying it to make the cookies dark chocolate with white chocolate chunks. The recipe was so simple – butter, sugar and flour and the cookies turned out just as I like them – quite shortbready. I used dutched cocoa which gave a wonderful depth of flavour and chunks of milky bar. I loved the easiness of these cookies and can see them becoming a favourite as I experiment with different variations.

Double Chocolate Cookies (adapted from Rachel Allen, Bake)

110g sugar
225g butter
225g flour
50g dutched cocoa
180g white chocolate cut into chunks

• Cream butter and sugar
• Stir in flour and cocoa and lastly chocolate chunks
• Roll into balls, place on trays and flatten slightly with a fork
• Bake at 170c for about 15 minutes
